HOW DO I BECOME A PART OF THE DCWE?
Positions in the DCWE are earned by audition.  All students, even upper-classmen, are required to audition at the start of each season in order to perform with the DCWE.
Winter term auditions are scheduled as needed, at the very start of the academic term. To schedule to your DCWE audition, contact Matthew Marsit.

WHAT OPENINGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR 2017-2018 DCWE?

Since every player is required to audition in the fall term, including upperclassmen, all positions in the ensemble are considered open.  The DCWE is a wind ensemble, using approximately 47-50 total musicians. This generally includes: 5 flutes, 2-3 oboes, 9-10 clarinets, 2-3 bassoons, 4-5 saxophones, 4 horns, 5 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 euphoniums, 2 tubas, 5 percussionists and a pianist.

If you play a secondary/harmony instrument (e.g. piccolo, Eb Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, etc.), please bring it with you to the audition. If possible, please also prepare a short playing sample for that instrument; otherwise, we can simply use some sight reading material during the audition.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR THIS AUDITION?

  • One solo selection or study etude of your choice that best displays your current playing ability – at least 4 minutes of music

  • All major scales and a chromatic scale through the complete range of your instrument

  • Sight-reading will also be included on all auditions

    • Percussionists: please prepare samples of your playing on at least two instruments highlighting your strongest skills in the percussion section.  No scales will be required, but sight-reading on a variety of instruments will be requested.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AUDITION PROCESS?  NERVOUS?  UNSURE IF YOU CAN TAKE PART?

The Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble explores the great and ever-expanding concert repertoire for wind ensemble, works ranging from chamber to symphonic, and shares this music with our community and those communities beyond the boundaries of the Dartmouth College campus through concertizing, small and large outreach projects and performances, and charitable endeavors that bring the gift of music and music making to all who welcome it.
